There was no time at my desk today. Instead, I spent the entire day at the farm, on my own but for these lovely creatures and a couple of meetings with farm contractors. I could never get tired of watching my very first Waler foal Miss Istanbul and today she gave me her first Eskimo kiss on the nose. It’s amazing what animals will do when you find the quiet and space to sit still in a paddock with them.
Over the past decade that I’ve been back onto the land, what I’ve learned for sure is that there is great value in separating the thinking and the doing. A day spent on the farm with my four-legged friends is the perfect thinking time I need for any analysis, strategy or writing project. Some of the best board papers I ever wrote came while shearing alpacas, drenching cows and mucking out stables. Who knew?!
When I’m spending time in the company of my animals, my brain relaxes, my mood lightens and the endorphins flow. What better way to plan for any major milestone?
You may not have a farm, you may not even have pets to distract you, but I bet you don’t come up with your best ideas while you’re perched 8 hours a day in front of your computer.
So how do you come up with your best ideas? What is your secret to get your creative juices flowing? How do you separate the thinking and the doing?
Yours in quiet contemplation,
Jen 🙂
